{Sunday, October 29, 2006 . E-Rugby - A Touchy Affair}

On Wednesday 25th OCT '06, NTU conducted their last training session at the NTU Rugby complex. As usual, the NTU Touch team was sharing the complex with the boys. As it was a last training session before they end the pre-season fitness training programme, the boys decided to have some fun instead. Many games was played on that day, sports like soccer, touch and sprints (chasing the soccer ball).

As requested by our very own touch girls, they wanted a sparring match against the boys. NTU Ruggers took the request seriously and form a strong 6-men touch team. Players like Lao Ying, Stormy Normy, Potato Thiam, Yik 'Bryanboy' were being lead by National Touch League MVP Adam 'Mat solo' Chan.

The friendly match was a tightly contested affair as both sides were adamant about winning. The guys were dominating in attacks and girls resilient in defense. The girls, led by 1.47m Lay was covering every inch of the playing pitch, breaking down the guy's flashy attacks. Its a wonder how far short legs can bring you. Sharee 'Fake Indian' was aggressive in defense and was heard swearing at the guys at every opportunity. Ms Chan 'Elite' Wenhui was directing the plays effectively and almost created a try out of nothing in the 7 min of the match, only to be denied after video replays.

Lao Ying was making aggressive runs at the girls, forgetting that it was touch instead of contact. His style of running was made popular in the 1980s Tv series Legend of the Condor Heroes and it is an honour to witness it again. Yik was constantly falling down trying to catch Thiam's 'Super 12' passes. Adam showed us why he was named MVP by creating countless chances, however, the guys are unable to finish off the moves. Stormy Norm was...erm... ok... we needed 6... and he was the nearest available.

It seemed that the points were gonna be split both ways as the minutes on the clock ticked away. 1.47m Lay tried orchestrating a move, indicating to her girls that it was the last attacking phase and it was to be the new move she picked up on her training stint in Siberia. By then, the visibility has already gone down to zero, a wild pass by one of the girls was coolly intercepted by Potato Thiam to score the only try of the game. He was later stretchered off the pitch because he had to overstretch himself to reach the high pass and subsequently sprained his back. He was denied medical attention because NTU Rugby is not an official team recognised by SRC and thus were offlimits to the medical help available.

"To be fair, i thot the girls did really well... we were lucky not to lose. Things would have been different if it were not the last day of fasting." said Mr. MVP Mat Solo Chan who was rushing off to the Nasi Ayam stall.

"HUH? End liaoz ar?" said a visibly tired and panting Stormy who never really got into any action.

"Thiam's passes was disappointing lar..It was not because my hands were short! ice cream anyone??" said Yik

After the friendly match, Potato Thiam received a call from one of the girls saying that World Cup bound 1.47m Lay's handphone is missing. And she wanted him to check with the boys. (only the ruggers and touch girls were at the complex, obviously the ruggers are the prime suspects)

Its no surprise that the ruggers are the prime suspects becos amongst them, there are indication that the handphone might be pinched by one of the boys.

Stormy: stolen SRC towels found in the room, with a 179 bus sign pasted on his toilet door
Law: with his magic, anything is possible. His tshirt had sleeves that night
Yik: been stealing other pple's socks and underwears, occasionally wearing them
Salsa King: stealing girls' hearts and making people's boyfriends cry
and many many more.

After a night spent at the NTU Police Department, the boys were cleared from the charge as Lay found the phone eventually.... in her very own bag.

"I always knew none of the boys are thieves... erm... i think.... ok... so i'm juz glad that this issue is over." said Thiam.

"With me as their captain, it is no wonder that my boys were the prime suspect. Nevertheless, I hope this chapter closes and brings us one step closer towards racial harmony." Wise words from Arjun 'Show It' Pandey.

NTU Rugby blogged on 8:57 PM

In what can be considered a barren year compared to our illustrious history (To have NEVER won a bronze in IVP competition) , the 2nd half of 2006 finally bore something for us Boon Lay warriors (reason for new name to be revealed in upcoming post) to cheer about.

Amidst all the firewalking, rendang eating and puasa season, Adam 'Mat Solo' Chan of 6 Pack Touch team was crowned the MVP of the recently concluded Touch Singapore League. Apparently his Div 2 season for Bedok Kings was so horrific that he swore off contact rugby for awhile and got in touch with his feminine side playing touch alongside girls on hazy saturday afternoons. Mat Solo remains the only NTU player besides Potato and Undroppable Qing in winning honours this season. Looks like there is some truth to the saying "Its good to be a King". He is in no way linked to the famous Adam Road Satay Stall.

"I was born with Chinese blood so i figured from young that soccer was never gonna be my thing. I am glad that I have excelled in some way and I hope my achievements on the field will be recognised by Mendaki and I will have a shot at the Young Malay Awards held later in the year at Geylang Serai." quipped a bemused Mat Solo.

Our NTU touch counterparts also had good news to share as 2 of those pretty lasses made the World Cup Bound Singapore touch team after months of intensive training at the concentration camp in Northern Siberia. Miss Elite Chan and Miss 1.47m Lay-dee, together with their Coach Ann 'The big bully" roughed it out with all the Singapore's finest and emerged as the top contenders to don Singapore colours for this upcoming tournament.

"I am very happy that 2 of my girls made it to the squad with me. Having already proved myself as a player, what I really needed was credentials in the coaching arena and I guess the selection results speaks for itself." The Bully Ann was obviously thrilled by this piece of good news.

"It comes as no surprise to me, since I am the captain of the NTU Touch Team. Making the squad was never in doubt. My height has never been a problem as we are not talking about basketball here. I am more worried whether my team mates are able to match my skills, wit and fitness. These things are beyond my control and I guess we will have to wait and see" 1.47m Lay-dee stayed cool behind her pair of shades and folded arms as she responded to the media's enquiries.

Miss Elite Chan is definitely thrilled to be given this chance to shine for Singapore. " You know months ago, when I had an accident on Aminurashid ' runs faster than you can say his name' Ash's motorbike, I thought my entire career was over. But then I only had to look back in time and see how Monica Seles recovered from her stabbing incident to continue dominating the tennis circuit. Monica is a close friend and she was the one who got me started on the long but rewarding road to recovery. It is all thanks to her that I am standing here today draped in the Singapore flag addressing everyone."

The Bully Ann also added " We thought we lost her few months back. Now she is back even stronger and fitter. The whole team feels inspired."

"To prep ourselves for this tournament, we will have to spar regularly with quality opponents. The NTU rugby boys are a good benchmark as they are all worldclass touch players, boasting even an MVP amongst their ranks. Its a pity that NTU has stopped recognising their talents."

{Friday, October 27, 2006 . NTU Rugby remains silent over merger reports}

NTU Rugby has refused to deny reports of an imminent merger of the club with NTU Sports Club.

A spokesman for the NTU Rugby would not comment on reports that NTU Sports Club was prepared to offer NTU Rugby a chance of a merger and that idea was put forth to members of the rugby club.

According to reports, several players of the rugby club were at Botok Jones discussing the prospect of joining up with the Sports Club and later in the evening, a special meeting was setup between the rugby club and Sports club representative.

NTU Sports Club is a high profile club in NTU and was officially launched in 1991, with the aim of promoting all kinds of sports activities in NTU. Sports Club is under the umbrella of the Students' Union as a non-academic constituent club, together with other academic clubs belonging to other schools (eg. Accountancy and Business Club, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Club) and 2 other non-academic constituent clubs (Welfare Services Club and Cultural Activities Club).

"Sports Club is feverish about promoting all sorts of sporty activities."

A spokeswoman for the Sports Club confirmed that there has been contact from the rugby club and talks have been going on.

However a spokesman for the rugby club insisted he had no knowledge of whether Sports Club was interested to take in the Rugby Club and could only say that all these rumours are baseless and should be ignored.

He later added that Sports Club "welcome anyone who has the objective of promoting their sports and healthy lifestyle" to be under them.

{Tuesday, October 24, 2006 . e-rugby - Post NRC Season Updates}

The final whistle for the Cup finals at Yio Chu Kang Stadium last saturday marked the end of this year's SRU National Rugby Championships. It also represents that the transfer window is officially open at 1900hrs (GMT +0800). While players return to their respective schools to prepare for their upcoming school campaigns, several high profilers have already been linked with moves to other clubs.

Stormy Normy

NTU's number 1 prop, Stormy Normy has been strongly linked to league and cup winners Bedok Kings throughout the season. Back in early July, he showed up at Bedok's training ground for a 2-weeks trial stint and was hugely impressive. Stormy then surprised both pundits and his fans by signing a 1 season contract extension with SRC. With the end of the season, speculations arose, strongly linking Stormy to Bedok Kings again. He was seen sitting with Bedok supporters during the cup final and also hanging out with Bedok players at their post match function. An eye witness claimed that he saw Stormy boarding the Bedok's Team Bus.
His agent commented - " Norman is busy preparing for his exams and school training. He will decide his future within the next few weeks"

Emery "Sub 10" Ong

The Speedster from Nanyang Avenue is also linked to Bedok Kings after being spotted with Stormy at a Bedok Kings post match function. Although the move the highly unlikely as Emery had just signed a 3-year contract with SRC, his fellow NTU teammates at Bedok expressed their delight at the possibility of him signing for Bedok.
"His speed is very deadly and it would be great playing with him.He did well this season! The number of tries he scored for SRC this season may be the club's record highest number of tries scored by a rookie"
His transfer may be hindered by recent news of the speedster getting infected with "Dota-litis". Doctors say that he is showing early signs of the disease but nothing is certain as of now.

Starlets Kevin "Salsa King" Ang & Gabriel "Gay Stickman" Loi

After a successful trial session with Champions - Bedok Kings. Both players has been offered a 3-yr contract starting next season. When contacted, Salsa king was busy trying to fight the 'Dota-litis' disease by distracting himself with a new programme known as "Football Manager 2007". But there are rumours that Salsa King is currently considering a change of position from his regular "In center" to a Flanker.
As for Gay Stickman, he could only reply with "huh err err i want to get bigger la.."

Tri-University Championship Updates
Transfer speculations for Mark "Mr Biceps" Lee continues as latest rumours say that Mr Biceps is signing a contract with NTU in January 2007 after accepting the school's offer for a Masters program in communications. The thought of him teamming up with his national/club teammate Rebel Rong in NTU colors would simply scare all oppositions.

Hottest News
NUS Prop/Sausage seller - Mark "Tightfit T-shirt" Koh has also been linked to NTU. Speculations started after the recent NUS 7s where he was seen preparing hotdogs and showed reluctance to play against either of the NTU sides.
However, it could also be a false alarm. Koh may just be linked to NTU because he is one of main bidders for the hotdog stall in NTU Canteen 2.

{Sunday, October 22, 2006 . Bedok Kings Claim Singapore Cup in Pulsating Final}

Bedok Kings capped a tremendous season last night, claiming home the Singapore Cup with a three tries to two, 19-15 win over the Brewerkz Bucks at Yio Chu Kang stadium. The Kings’ defensive screen proved the winner as they completed the coveted league and cup Double, thwarting an impressive but late offensive effort by the Bucks to condemn them to their second successive cup failure against the Kings.

It was an exciting contest between two evenly matched teams and the final margin really suggested a closer encounter than was actually the case.

In keeping with the tension befitting of a cup final, both teams made a jittery start - right from the kick-off when Bucks failed to kick the ball past 10m. Despite early edgy exchanges, Bucks was quick to settle into composure and dominated the forward play in the
early minutes, with Ben Wheeler capitalising on sluggish scrum defence to break through, but the Bedok backline was on song to contain the Bucks skipper.

Bucks controlled the majority of the match in the first half as they relentlessly piled up the pressure during the first quarter of the game. Bedok Kings will have winger Andrew ‘Flash’ Kagoro and fullback Dallas Pitches to thank as they kept Bucks scoreless, defending brilliantly and foiling any breaking runs by the Bucks backline.

Flyhalf John Forrester was unlucky not to give Bedok the lead as his 10th minute penalty struck the left-hand post.

An 18th minute penalty were the only points mustered by the Bucks after a long spell of pressure and territorial dominance.

The opening try of the game came shortly through neat phases of play and some quick recycling of the ball by the Bucks forwards. Aaron ‘Juggernaut’ Browne received the ball on the blind side and a strong run took him across the line at the left-hand corner to give Bucks a handy lead of 8-0.

The lead soon evaporated as the Kings regained their composure and i
n-form winger Flash took centre stage. A breakout in the 27th minute of play from the Bedok forwards saw neat exchanges of passes between brothers Rongy and Rebel Rong. After a quick ball out to the backline, NTU’s Daniel ‘Potato’ Thiam committed the last defenders and breached the Bucks defence before putting Flash through for the Kings’ first try of the game.

A successful conversion by Forrester narrowed the score to 8-7.

Flash would then increase the lead for Bedok in the 34th minute, scoring an inspiring breakout try after a quick, last gasp pass from Thiam, as he outpaced the static covering defence and claimed his second try of the game.

A second
successful conversion by Forrester brought the score to 8-14, going into the interval.

The second half had a controversial moment when a collapsed Bucks driving maul from a 5m-lineout was deemed to be due to an intentional player infringement; with Bucks awarded a penalty try just halfway through the second half, edging into the lead at 15-14 after a successful conversion.

Stand-out fullback Dallas Pitches made an incisive run in the 67th minute on the short side as he committed two defenders before sending winger Eric Ng sprinting over for a well-earned try, and established a crucial lead of four points.

Forrester was unlucky with the conversion attempt as he struck the post once more, leaving the score standing at 15-19 to the Kings.

The Bucks had the better of the final ten minutes but it was a story of ‘too little and too late’. Despite pressing hard in the dying minutes and way deep into injury time, Bucks were unable to break through a resolute Bedok defence that stood brave in the face of adversity.

The final whistle eventually arrived and by then the crowd of supporters were already clanging with delight and a pulsating, ear-splitting cacophony to greet Bedok Kings’ second successive cup triumph.

Club captain Gus McKay was in a jubilant euphoria at the sound of the fulltime whistle.

“We’ve worked hard all season and today we played our guts out for each other. And with a crowd like this, how can we not be inspired,” said Gus as he dedicated the victory to the ever-faithful club supporters.

When asked about the length of the injury time played, Bedok boss Tony King unleashed the fury well-known to all, “The referee is a f**king c**t. It’s supposed to be a game of two HALVES, for f**k sake.”

On his two assists of the game, Thiam revealed, “I knew I had to get the ball out wide. And when you have Flash on the outside, a try-scoring opportunity is always there for the taking.”

When asked on his contribution to the build-up for Bedok’s first try, Rebel Rong remains
humble, honest and down-to-earth in his own way, “I am damn good. Do you know what my jersey number stands for? I am number one. I am the best.”

Head coach Danny ‘Stone Cold’ Tauroa was unruffled during Bedok’s pulsating catch-up game in the second half and remained cool after the victory.

“We talked about taking the game to them and this was a real pressure game today. To play the way we did showed great confidence and we played really well when we had the ball. When they had the ball, we kept a really good defensive shape and it was an impressive team effort altogether,” said Tauora.

The NRC season 2006 reaches a fitting end with a hugely-anticipated Singapore Cup final between two exciting teams, Bedok Kings and Brewerkz Bucks, at Yio Chu Kang stadium on Saturday; and adding to the excitement is the fact that neither side is a clear favourite. Both teams will battle for the honour of being crowned the Singapore Cup Champions in what promises to be one hell of a game. The Bucks, who edged out SCC in the semis, are 5/6 to take the title.

Bedok Kings prop Rebel Rong has been a major fitness concern in the lead-up to the final after missing out on a crucial training on Wednesday, and is 7/9 to grab the first drink during any random water breaks.

{Thursday, October 19, 2006 . Rugby-Net: Cup Preview}

The build-up is underway to Finals weekend for Singapore's top rugby competitions - the NRC Cup and Plate.

The two Finals will all be played this Saturday 21 October, with the rugby feast kicking off in YCK stadium at 3.00pm when Bucks plays SCC in the Final of the Plate. At 5.00pm, the NRC Cup Final between Bedok Kings and Bucks will kick off at the same venue.

All 2 finals will be televised live on NTU e-rugbyNet 1 and NTU Rugby-Net live.

Judging by the positive noises coming out of the Kings and Bucks camps ahead of this coming saturday's NRC Cup final, expect a fast and entertaining game ahead.

Both sides are riding on a wave of confidence, albeit of varying lengths.

Kings's expansive approach has been vindicated bar the occasional aberration, while Bucks, the competition's Jekyl and Hyde character, hinted at shedding their ever-present inconsistent tag when dismantling SCC 26 – 16 during the semifinal.

Weather permitting (low psi and dry), the weekend's clash has the hallmarks of a free-flowing encounter as two powerhouse of singapore rugby fight to become the undisputed Champions of NRC.

It was a gloomy, error-ridden 5th-round encounter, when Bucks inflicted Kings with their only defeat in the league at Turf City. (not that Bucks were complaining).

Since then Kings have stayed true to their exciting mix of style and substance and are comfortably the competition's standard bearers at both ends of the paddock.

Kings have clocked up 370 points in 8 matches, and only letting in 81 points along the way. Bucks are rated second with 357 points scored and 111 points conceded.

Coaches Danny and Tony have sticked to the same starting line-up, making about only 1 or 2 changes (at most) per game -- and this week is no exception as he massages a wealth of talent into his 22.

Whoever turns out for the Kings this weekend will not deviate from their policy; that is, scoring tries from anywhere on the park.

"I hate to be confident... Its not a good way to go in (into the Finals) But man... we have so done the work and they are soooooooooo not going to know what hits them on Saturday! Bring It On!"
Captain Gus 'Fatty' reaffirmed at training this week.

Conditions and Buck's collective resolve conspired against Kings implementing that game plan effectively in their last meeting, though Gus 'Fatty' still gleaned positives from the experience.

"It was probably our worst performance of the year. We didn't get any lineout ball, any possession .... and yet we were showing strong character and getting a try back just before the final whistle," he said.

"We'll need a huge improvement on what we did in that game, and they are stronger compared to 3 weeks ago."

"They will be (Bucks' forwards) up there at the breakdowns too. It will be like playing ourselves, they're big guys, they throw the ball around and break one-on-one tackles. BUT, We'll just have to get in their faces."

Midfield is another obvious focal point with NTU's Thiam lining up against A.'The Giant' Browne.

The current Singapore player also predicted an open game with plenty of lateral movement.

"Bucks play a very similar style to us but not as electrifying as how we run it. They have game breakers all over the park but not as dynamic as what we are," Potato Thiam said.

However, Coach Danny did insist there was also method in Kings enterprising approach and they were also content to play the percentages.

"We will try to maintain some structure in our side so that we have a good platform. Ideally, we can play any kind of game."

The preference though, is to give the ball some air.

"We don't want to have a conservative approach," Coach Danny said.

"I've been in teams in the past where you try to limit your mistakes and hold onto the ball."

"We believed (against Bucks) that if we back each other up and use our skills to our utmost, then we won't make mistakes. No Errors."

"When things started happening, everyone got excited. We've got to make sure that we can temper that with some cool heads."

{Wednesday, October 18, 2006 . Varsity Plagiarism}

In the academically driven society of Singapore, the cream of rugby players under the age of 25 not only has to cope with life as a professional player, they also have to double up part time as aspiring students struggling to clear their academic units every semester.

From the first day of tearing themselves from the green blades of grass to throd on the cement pavements of NUS, NTU and most recently SMU, rugby players have struggled to adapt to their new environment what with the new setting and the totally new set of regulations.

Where uniformity and team work prevailed on the field, every rugby player donned an identical set of jersey and played to a structured set of game play and phases. For the luckier ones who are backed by rich Ang Moh bankers who double up as mafia hitmen at night, they even get sponsored shorts, socks and underwear. Despite the small discrepancy, all rugby players look to the ones perched right at the top and emulate their success story, be it a well worked backs move, fit forwards who run and tackle all day, or even steamrolling everyone with truckloads of cash(SCC?).

However, in the academic world, it is a whole new ball game. Intellectual property rights are very much enforced and academicians do not condone acts of plagiarism being done right under their noses. In fact, SMU even has a link about academic integrity that warns their students against such acts.

Imagine the editorial board's surprise where we discovered an article in SMU's monthly digest that appeared to be copied word for word right off this blog. The extra goofy photos attached to their version of the article is a half hearted and lame attempt in trying to cover up their lack of respect for the artistic work of our journalists. Apparently these SMU players chose the easiest way out to enjoy instant fame and recognition, and conveniently rubbed salt into the wounds of NTU who are still smarting from the two successive defeats in both finals on Sunday. Click here
for the 'SMU article'

"What they(SMU) did can be described as despicable. It is almost equivalent to copying in mid term exams. They beat us fair and square in the 7s, i respect that. Giants like us (NTU) and NUS are actually using this tourney to develop the younger players. Nobody celebrates winning the inter-toto cup right? The very least he/she could do is to acknowledge the e-rugby editors. There are friends in SMU who are equally disgusted." said Potato Thiam.

"I refresh this page every 5 minutes for the interesting and original articles that are constantly being produced hot from the oven. It is certainly too much for them to just take away all the fun and excitement in the only activity worth cheering about in my life now. What am I going to do if I cant refresh anymore???" said Refresher (NTURugbyNews fan from SMU).

"The sausage is damn awesome laa...that guy over there is my sausage, I can eat him all day and night!!Let me go and sharpen my teeth now" said Rebel Rong, who was eyeing the official sausage man on Sunday Mark "Tight fit t-shirts" Koh and oblivious about the question being posed to him.

This blatant act of plagiarism has hit the editors real hard, the very ones who sacrificed much social life into the development of this young startup. It is yet to be seen if NTURugbyNews can recover from the cheap imitations originating from City hall.

"We are the winners and we can do what we want. I don't have to explain my actions to anyone. We proved ourselves on the field and that's all it matters." SMU Maestro Daniel Marc Chow was in no mood to explain himself as he went up on stage to collect his Lee Kuan Yew Best Journalist Award for his write up on the NUS 7s tournament, proudly confered upon by Straits Times Singapore.

"It is ok to plagiarise. At least give us credit for it. But to show no remorse at all is a showing of poor manners. I pity the poor boy and i wish he finds peace with his soul.." sighed Stormy Normy who has recently taken up a module on spiritual wellbeing.

e-rugby officials confirmed with us at 2357 that they might consider taking legal actions.

{Tuesday, October 17, 2006 . e-rugby: Transcript of NTU Snubber Revealed !!!}

e-rugby Exp0sed has discovered a copy of the interview transcript between a SMU Sports Reporter and Amos ‘The Man Who Snubbed NTU’ SIOW.

SMU: Wow, it must have been a great day for you guys. Any comments on winning this tourney?

Amos: Honestly, we didn’t expect to win. But hey, come on. Props to us for rising to the occasion, considering we were playing without Des and Alex Ong.

SMU: Most of you guys had National 7s experience ain’t it? A blessing in disguise perhaps?

Amos: Well… Certainly no blessing in disguise. We’re out in the open man. We’re the REAL DEAL, the other teams just have to live with it. (Editor: ‘live with it’ = ‘suck it’)

SMU: From your point of view, was it a mistake for NUS and NTU to even out their teams?

Amos: I think in terms of winning the tournament, they shouldn’t have even out their teams in the first place. I mean it does them a world of good by bringing in the new faces and all, but who’s bringing back the trophy today? (Smirks)

SMU: You guys have probably fired up some intense vendetta out there today. RUMOUR HAS IT that a certain Rebel Rong can’t wait to get into the thick of action. Word has it that he has in fact, LAID THE GAUNTLET down on SMU.

Amos: Well, WHY DIDN’T HE LAY IT DOWN TODAY THEN?

SMU: We have to ask you this. Given another chance, would you STILL snub NTU?

Amos: I’m delighted to have won my first piece of silverware with SMU and tasted some form of victory today, it does console me perhaps. (Not answering to the question)

SMU: Any prospects of a local exchange programme to NTU then?

Amos: NO. Certainly not in the four years I’m with SMU. From the looks of it today, they STILL have a long way to go.

SMU: Alright, this concludes our interview.

Amos: Eh wait… Btw did you see Thiam’s kick that went backwards? That was AMAZING.

SMU: …

{Monday, October 16, 2006 . SMU Topples NUS & NTU to Win the NUS 7s Carnival}

The NUS 7s Carnival was a fruitful event, attracting the likes of reigning national U-20 Champions - Singapore Polytechnic, Combined ITE, NTU, SMU and current inter-university title holders – NUS.

It was an action filled affair with both NUS and NTU dominating in numbers, sending two teams each; with the aim of providing invaluable match experience for the younger players. However, it was SMU, who showed that strength may not necessarily come in numbers, as they remain undefeated in all their matches en route to the finals. Fielding only a single team, their experience in sevens rugby made up for their shortfall in players.

Defeating four teams in total from both NUS and NTU, SMU found a structured pattern of play and played to their strength and weaknesses, putting away tries with devastating effect. It turned out to be a disappointing one-sided affair in the cup finals, as SMU overpowered NTU to claim their first silverware of the season.

Cup Finals
Champions – SMU
Runner-up – NTU

Plate Finals
Champions – SP
Runner-up – NTU

Despite losing out in both finals, the NTU SELECTORS are pleased with the performance from both teams; and are optimistic about the future.

“This is a promising start. The season hasn’t exactly begun, but we’re glad to have a decent showing. It was a good learning experience for the new players as well, and we hope that all of them would have had an enjoyable time out there,” revealed an awesome NTU SELECTOR.

“The 2nds showed solidarity as a team, and it was a strong effort to reach the plate finals. It was a tough final and they displayed promising attitude and aptitude.”

Head coach Lincoln Tan said, “I saw a lot of positive attitude and some brilliance in play. But it was clear that our fitness level was not up to standard yet. No worries, we’ll work from here, and I’ll see you guys on Wednesday.”

{Friday, October 13, 2006 . Weekend Preview: Padang Shield Revisited}

Just a month ago, SRC was languishing outside the playoff zone and struggling to find form. Since then, they have shrugged off their inconsistency and forced their way into a semi-final berth. They have established their credentials and pulled off three solid victories leading into the end of the league phase, displaying a brand of hardworking local rugby.

SCC on the other hand, has always been in contention for the top spot, and led the league for the quarter of the season, impressing their supporters by remaining undefeated for their first four matches. It will be an interesting rematch between the Padang rivals with SCC determined to avenge their loss in the annual Padang Shield.

The SRC backline has notched up stirring tries through the industrious effort from the forwards but they would not expect to roll so easily over the advantage line against a SCC pack more hardened than theirs.

“We’re not going to keep every ball and they’ve got a daunting forward pack. But we have to be very accurate with what we do around the field and minimize turnovers.” said Stormy Normy, predicting a confrontational right from the opening whistle.

The SRC frontman said while his team was entitled to feel good about themselves after dismantling Jap Association and edging out Bedok Kings, they had to remain grounded.

“While we’re really happy with the way we played, the guys have to understand those were past matches. The challenge for us is to duplicate those performances,” Stormy said.

“There’s no reason we can’t do it again. It’s the same players in our team, it’s all there for us,” claimed star winger Emery ‘Sub-10’ Ong.

Leading the SCC forward pack would be none other than the ever intimidating Alan ‘Juggernaut’ Kent. After losing out on a final showdown with Bucks in the Premier finals, Kent is intense in helping his club add some deserving silverware to their collection.

Kent, who will captain the SCC Div 1 team for the first time, reacted to talk about his team’s ‘bullying’ style by allowing Premier players boost up the squad.

“We have not breached any regulations whatsoever. I am here to stay and to win. And I guarantee that they’d be in for some really physical rugby,” said Kent.

When asked on his bruising approach in forward play, the 128kg monster stated, “We don’t show mercy and even less do we ask for mercy. Rugby is a contact sport and our approach has not changed since the club started rugby. We get stuck in to intimidate our opponents, but all within the laws. We will be malicious.”

The NTU SELECTORS would be hoping for a sterling effort from both Stormy and Emery.

“In a final, little things can make the difference between winning and losing. Tactical excellence can be conclusive but that cannot be the only yardstick for victory. Individual performances can turn the game around as well,” said an optimistic NTU SELECTOR.

It has been nearly three months into the academic term for the tertiary institutions, and Rugby-Net has decided to catch up with the man who gave NTU the brush-off and fellow club mates Thiam, Kiat and Qing the cold shoulder - Amos ‘The Man who Snubbed NTU’ Seow, on life after snubbing NTU.

Rugby-Net: “So how’s getting used to going back to school?”

Amos: “Man, it’s been rough. It’s really tough getting your mindset back to the books and getting down to studying again. I mean, who remembers how to study after NS?”

Rugby-Net: “We heard you’re doing Arts in SMU, enjoying the vicious world of textbooks and readings?”

Amos: “It’s crazy man. I’ve been like sleeping at four in the morning and waking up at seven to go to school. I could hardly get any sleep at all man.”

Amos: “There’re just too much readings to do, project datelines to meet, assignments to submit and all the blardy quizzes to prepare for.

(In the background)
Thiam: “Eh me too. I sleep at four in the morning also…”

Amos: “Doing project as well?”

Thiam: “Nah… Playing DOTA with Yik and co.”

Amos: “Wtf…”

Rugby-Net: “Arts in SMU is tough eh? Even ‘Stormy’ Normy is having an easy time doing Accountancy in NTU… He’s been DOTA(ing) and sleeping most of the time. Rumour has it that he has been spending a lot of time chilling out with a certain Chad or Todd.”

Amos: “Aargh… It’s damn sian lah. I have to take seven modules this semester. It’s f**king crazy, I thought only engineers do this kind a sh*t. Give me a break man.”

(In the background)
Kiat: “See lah. Told you already. Who ask you don’t come NTU sia?”

Amos: “How’d I know man? Sigh…”

Rugby-Net: “Well, it ain’t easy anywhere I suppose. But hope things do turn out better in the near future for you.”

Amos: “Yea thanks man. I appreciate it.”

Following concern on his well-being from the NTU correspondents, Amos’ decision to rebuff NTU for SMU may seem to be a step back. It could get even more interesting when he plays his first game against NTU in the upcoming IVP, not only because he will be up against some of his current club mates, but because he actually turned down an offer to join them.

{Wednesday, October 11, 2006 . e-rugby: Interview with Lay}

e-rugby: How were you introduced to rugby?

Lay: I had always played sports growing up and in school, but I didn’t think my athletic career was going to continue in college. However, after the first couple of weeks at JJC, I got really antsy not playing a sport, and missed being part of a team. A few gals in my school played touchrugby, and they convinced me to give it a try. I was hesitant at first, but after my first practice, I was instantly in love with rugby. I was excited to go to every practice and always came back with a smile on my face.

e-rugby: Oh... I see..Who
is your Biggest Influence On Your Touch Rugby Career?

Lay: My coach, KeHui aka Ah Neo. Neo has taught me so much tactically. She has been a true inspiration to the team. She has a way of making you feel like you can accomplish anything.

e-rugby: Ah... good old Ah Neo aye.. Long time never see her. I should get her on my interview sometime..
So... What are Your Personal Goals?

Lay: To lead my gals in NTU to victory over NUS! And hopefully I would have an opportunity to play at the national level.

e-rugby: What do you think of NTU's Touch team?

Lay: One of my favorite aspects of the NTU Women’s Touch Rugby team is its incredible diversity. Before I came to NTU, I was somewhat ignorant and assumed touch rugby was only for women with a certain personality and body type. However, my misconceptions were soon shattered when I joined the team, and I saw that women with a range of body types, ethnicities, denominations, sexual orientations and personalities were all part of the rugby club. Although there is great diversity within the members of the NTU team, we all share a common passion for rugby and dedication to the team.

e-rugby: We heard that the NTU Men's team contacted you to participate in their team for the upcoming Street Rugby Challenge. Any comments on that?
Lay: Hahahahaha, at first i thought theres a PURE womens team. I din know that its actually a mixed team. To be frank, i was planning to win the street challenge. But once i heard its a mixed competiton, my heart shattered. How are we gonna win it with the Big and clumsy guys? Its a 4 v 3 tournament. Imagine 2 guys on the court, no more space to run already! Hahahahaha.

e-rugby: ........

e-rugby: But we heard that they are actually selecting the BEST to take part in this yr's competition. They may be big, but definitely got what it takes to win it.

Lay: Hahahahahha, win? I dun think so... Look at Norm...erm... lets not say names. Some of them are so fat... erm... i mean huge... They are simply not agile enough. Its not like contact where they can just bash their way thru'. It takes speed, skills and intelligence to play touch.

e-rugby: WTF... Ok... i think thats all for today...

Lay: Wait! still got that guy who *@(*^&*^&%^$%#@$%#$%^*&^*& %$@#%, Hahahahahaha, ^^&*%^%$%^$&5^$%$^%^*&, Hahahahahahaha.

(due the the content of this remark, e-rugby decided NOT to publish it)

e-rugby: Ok guys, interview over... Lets go...

Lay: Wait! I'm not finish yet! still got these 3 guys........ (blah blah blah)

{Tuesday, October 10, 2006 . Rugby-Net: The Rugby Magician}

Magic, at a simplistic level, is the art of entertaining audiences by performing illusions and tricks. On a greater perspective, it is the power to control Mother Nature, to contain the sun and bring forth the rain. Such is the influence of NTU's Rugby Magician, Jason ‘Rain Man’ Law.

Rugby-Net caught up with Jason as he shared his views on being a magician and his upcoming performance in NTU.

Rugby-Net: “So Jason, do you prefer to be called a Magician or a Magicman?”

Jason: “Damn. Every time I hear this question, I’m like ‘Gawd, you must be friggin joking’. Everyone who’s in the magic bizniss knows that serious magicians are simply known as... magicians! To be a Magicman would imply that I’m a fraud, some kind of children’s birthday party clown performer, which I’m not!”

Rugby-Net: “Whoa cool it man. Don’t bite my head off, dawg. What’s the big deal?”

Jason: “What do you mean what’s the big deal? Heck, the next thing I know, people will start asking me if I indulge in ‘Magick’ too. ‘Magick’ is the trade of the Devil and I sure as hell didn’t sell my soul to the Devil.”

Jason: “Criss Angel, he's a bloody fraud and con-artist man… hope he gets herpes and rots. He probably practises ‘Magick’, so does David Copperfield, David Blaine and Jerry Seinfeld, but not me man. I practise good old magic, one of a dying breed of honest magicians. I mean, just look at me, do you think I’m out to defraud you? You can trust me.”

Rugby-Net: “Err… alright. (Awkward) So how’s it like being a magician?”

Jason: “Life as a magician is really not easy. I thought it’s going to be all fun but man, was I wrong. Some stunts were ‘legally’ and ‘lawfully’ challenging; and when you’re doing things that challenge your life, it makes it even more difficult.”

Rugby-Net: “Legally and lawfully challenging?”

Jason: “You know, smuggling stuff and all. We call it the sleight-of-hand smuggling, that kinda stuff.”

Rugby-Net: “How in the world do you prepare for such feats? I mean, you could get caught by the authorities?”

Jason: “I try to do my due diligence, get together proper preparation and take minimal risks. Just about everything that I’m doing is going into uncharted territory, so you don’t know until the end of the day if you’ve prepared well enough.”

Rugby-Net: “Man, you’re into some real deal.”

Rugby-Net: “You do have some tension with Criss Angel, I assume?”

Jason: “We go kinda way back. I showed him the ropes and he turned his back on me. The next thing I knew, I got a call from my agent and he told me that he’s dropping me from his lineup since apparently, Criss Angel just signed on to his agency. What a fag... Now I need to get a new agent and man, searching Google for an agent is going to take so much work. So I figured, f**k that s**t. I’ll get myself an engineering degree to back me up and they can k**s my a** for all I care.”

Rugby-Net: “Then again, thanks to you… we’ve got Mindfreak to watch.”

Jason: “F**k you man. You trying to pull a fast one on me? Trying to be smart, dude?”

Rugby-Net: “Cool it man. It was a joke. Take it easy. Damn, see? Now it’s starting to rain.”

Rugby-Net: “So about the upcoming performance, what can we expect?”

Jason: “Well, the usual thing. Some levitation, walking on walls, people disappearing and stuff like that. Maybe I’ll throw in some teleportation as well. We’ll see.”

Rugby-Net: “Looks like it’s gonna be a blast. On behalf of Rugby-Net, we’d like to wish you all the… Jason…? Wtf man… Jason...? I swear he was sitting right here. Jason..?”

{Monday, October 09, 2006 . e-rugby: New Virus-Tzeness}

In the midst of the hazy air in Singapore, there is another more hazardous pollution around NTU. Not pollutants in the air but pollutants in the computers of NTU ruggers. For people who still do not have the slightest idea of what this IT pollutant is all about, it is the ‘Tzeness’ bug. It is more deadly than the Trojan. It is more serious than any other epidemic (including SARS).

For users out there who have been affected by this bug, e-rugby is sorry that we did not manage to curb this outbreak in time, causing people to lose important documents saved in computers or thumb drives. For people who have not been affected, what we can say is ‘Take care! And try seeking for the most sophisticated software in the market cos Tzeness hurts!’

Now, we shall take a look at what are some of the destructions that Tzeness has done so far. It has erased some of the data in hard drives, causing panic for people such as Norman who had to rush down to hall at 1am just to rectify the problem. Besides this traumatic experience, Tzeness can also cause errors to appear in games! The errors cannot be solved even if Bill Gate’s consultants have come down. No wonder Tze ‘the Catwalker’ was invited to pose for Microsoft’s products over the weekend.

"Everytime i play DOTA, the com will crash exactly to wat TZE predicted.... Its freaky." -said Yik
Reliable sources reported that Tze created this bug because he was always owned and dominated in DOTA games. Out of anger, he decided to create the ‘Tzeness’ to stop people from playing DOTA. Tze attained a PhD in computer science at the age of 19 and he has a knack for creating some complex bugs which are difficult to decode.

According to an anonymous victim, he was so dejected about the crash in his computer that he began to drown his sorrows by washing the toilet again and again. The victim's mental state is currently unstable. From this action, readers out there better watch out for this new computer bug.

For more updates, watch out for this space!

{Sunday, October 08, 2006 . Weekend Review}

After a entire week of build up and controversies, the battle for fourth place in Division 1 finally kicked off at Farrer Park yesterday. Being in a less favorable position, Bedok Kings took the game to SRC by scoring a converted try early in the first half only after missing 2 crucial penalty kicks. Late in the first half, a series of missed passes and ill discipline by the Kings gave SRC the chance to turn the game around by scoring a couple of breakaway tries putting them in front. It was encouraging that the Kings never gave up the chase even after SRC scored their fourth try, giving them the bonus point to seal their place in the playoffs.

Congrats to Stormy Normy, Emery 'Sub 10' and Ash for making it to the plate semis.

Thiam, "Well, Norm make me eat my words i guess. I never thought they would make it past the on-form Kings. I hope they can now go all the way and win the coverted Plate."

In the Premier league Cup semi-finals, Bedok Kings were up against a new look Wanderers side. The Kings led by a try, early in the game, courtesy of winger Eric Ng. Highlight of the game was the second half where the crowd was awed by the pace the Bedok backline which surprisingly included a 1.68m, 86kg center - Daniel "Potato" Thiam. Potato Thiam managed to make a couple of incredible runs which resulted in 2 tries, but also left crowd in bewilderment. Bedok progressed to the Cup Finals with high level of confidence and of course, the chance to do the double will certainly be a great motivation for the players.

A delirious Thiam after the match about his tries - "when i was running, i could only hear Kings coach danny's voice going 51, 52, 53 (the countdown timing for Bedok's special fitness sprints)... in my head. I just close my eyes and ran as fast as i could." NTU SELECTORS are considering implementing this 'special' fitness sprints into NTU trainings.

The Rong brothers, NTU's Rebel Rong and NTU probable Rongy had plenty of action, making many runs, faking passes and turning over balls for the team. It is obvious that Rongy aka Mr. V (violated) was targetted by the wanderers forward pack. He was being rucked on the head and suffered a few high tackles.

Rongy said, "They tried to open a can of whooping on me, BUT i wouldn't let them."

But what was more worrying for the NTU selectors (YES, they are still around and they were there) was that all three NTU (related) players had a fair share of attention from the medical personnel - Thiam - Chest pain (was viciously rucked by a 150 kg Hooker), Rongy - Cramps (while trying to side-step), Rebel Rong - just out of breath (wats new??). Investigations are ongoing to confirm if Rongy's cramps were similar to that of Mark "Mr Biceps" Lee (who was substituted late in the first half).

Rebel said, "Did you see how i step thru' the wanderers players? I now truely think that I'M DAMN GOOD."

On behalf of the e-rugby team, we would like to congratulate the newly-attached Mr. U and Mrs U. They will be on honeymoon for the next few days. Lets wait for the good news.

NTU's Stormy charged

After an intensive investigation into photo evidence provided by e-rugby Editors, the NTU Protectorate have charged NTU/SRC power forward Stormy Normy with breaching rules on threathening players with Death.

The charges having nothing to do with allegations about Stormy not coming to aid for Stickman during his sexual harassment in the gym on Monday.

Stormy was suspected to be in cahoots with the gay gym instructor, but as there is insufficient evidence, the allegation was quickly dismissed. However, The NTU authorities are investigating it and also continuing inquiries into other claims made by some important eye-witnesses.

Kings in a do-or-die match against SRC

NTU/Bedok King's Centre QING insists he is ready for the tough match against SRC in NRC Div 1's final league game.

The Kings are currently 3 points behind SRC. A win will ensure them a place in the playoffs and condemn the other team into the relegation zone.

Qing said: "It is a difficult one because we are 3 pts behind them so it is going to be a hard game. They will probably sit back and hold out for a draw and that will be difficult for us. We gotta get some pts on the board and force them to come out and play. If that happens, you can expect a great game ahead. It will be an exciting journey for us. SRC is a club with a great history, Capt Kong played there and they reached the Div 1 League final in 2004. We started the season bad, we hope to make things right by qualifying for the Plate."

Roommate/NTU teammate/NUS alliance/SRC prop Stormy said: "They will probably be favourites to win the match. Bedok Kings are not the strongest team in Div 1 at the moment but what you are guaranteed over there is a passionate crowd. I will do watever it takes , from now till saturday, to make sure SRC wins. If i have to kill... erm... ya... i will train harder."

"I think we have done okay, we have a good result against the Japs and that would set us up for the difficult trip to Farrer Park on saturday."

A death threat has been issued to ‘Undroppable’ Qing.

Qing's Death Threat

Because of this latest threat, the NTU-Protectorate has announced a threat level of Threat-con 2, an intermediate level of warning category.

A NTU-Protectorate representative stated, “We are increasingly seeing these dangerous advocates every now and then, apparently coinciding with a crucial match or a deciding fixture. Our only explanation is that they seek these opportunities to exploit our player vulnerabilities. They take advantage of our passion for the game to impose their menacing agenda.”

When pressed to explain possible precautions to the threat, the reply was vague. “Well, the possibilities of any mishaps are endless. Qing alone cannot protect himself from underlying dangers. You can’t trust just anyone, one day he may be your roommate, another day he may be the assassin.”

In order to explore possible deterrence measures, the NTU-Protectorate will establish a special commission. ‘Bryanboy’ Yik has been tapped to spearhead Qing’s all-round protection and examine what counter measures should be employed.

“Yik has strong counter-defensive measures and they have proven effective in his gaming tactics. We have no one else better for this job. He can watch over Qing in any way he needs to, or wants to.”

The NTU-Protectorate sees this threat as a nexus of the most serious challenges to player safety and will do everything within its power to prevent any misfortune from happening.

{Monday, October 02, 2006 . e-rugby : Gabriel ‘Stickman’ Loi Harassed in NTU Gym}

On 2nd October, Gabriel ‘Stickman’ Loi was working out in the gym with Stormy Normy when a stranger approached him and tried to pick him up. At that intense moment, where muscles are aching and the brain is lacking oxygen, ‘Stickman’ gladly reciprocated the friendly gesture and gave the stranger his phone number. It was a move which sparkled exciting actions that happened in the gym later on.

As ‘Stickman’ was working out his chest with the free-weights bench press, the unknown stranger came to assist him by being a spotter. What followed next was totally beyond one’s imagination. The stranger actually took the opportunity to caress ‘Stickman’ chest and he explained that he was afraid that the bar would collapse on ‘Stickman’. What an excuse!! But he said it with sincerity and ‘Stickman’ just had to accept that explanation despite being violated.

That was not the end to ‘Stickman’ tormented time in the gym. When he was doing squats with the hydraulic machine, he was visually harassed by the stranger. As ‘Stickman’ was working out his quads, the stranger was actually looking and observing ‘Stickman’ body curvature as though there was some magnetic attraction between them. What a Sick guy to have in the gym!

After the gym session, during dinner, ‘Stickman’ was exclusively interviewed by e-rugby.

e-rugby: So what do you got to say regarding this horrific incident?

Stickman: I felt traumatized by the whole incident and was helpless at that time. The fact that Stormy left me in the lurch just made me feel as if I am gonna be dinner for that monster.

e-rugby: What advice do you have for your fellow teammates who intend to go gym?

Stickman: I just want everyone to watch out for this monster in the gym. He was sick. And also to go there with a reliable partner who can take care of you. Lastly, never wear a skimpy outfit like what I wore.

e-rugby: Some words of wisdom that was. Anyway, hope that you can get over this whole incident soon and be ready for the NUS 7’s in a couple of weeks’ time. Ciao!

3 pertinent issues that arose from this incident.

  • Why did Stormy Normy not go rescue him during that time of emergency.
  • Was Stormy the stranger’s accomplice in crime?
  • Was ‘Stickman’ the only rugger to have suffered from such bad experiences?

We would like to hear views from viewers out there!

In a topsy turvy season so far, SRC came up once more against the very opponents who came away with a lame win during the season opener much earlier. Eager to erase the nightmarish loss from their memories and exact revenge for their poor suffering forefathers, the local lads of SRC (minus the skinny ang moh) had fire in their eyes the moment they entered the stadium and saw the Singapore Japanese Association people sitting in the Yio Chu Kang stands built by the Prisoners of War during the Syonan-To era. To rub salt to the wound, the Japs had paid off some of Singapore's finest mercenaries to don their colours. Seems like money can even buy loyalty when they managed to feature a player who donned Wolfpakz colours just few weeks ago.

Right from the kickoff, SRC boys charged at the Japs who struggled to handle the wet and slippery ball. The relentless pressure and hunger for the ball paid off when the SRC forwards, marshalled by their Pudgy Hooker Ben won possession of the ball and set up clean rucks to release the lightning quick and very young SRC backline. A long pass all the way to the wing saw Emery 'Sub 10' Ong do what he does best, burning down the wings at will and score the first try of the game with only less than 5 minutes gone.

The Japs were certainly shell shocked going down to a team they OWNEDDD earlier in the season, failing to get into their groove and turn on their physical game of rugby. Emery 'Sub 10' Ong once again hounded after their candy asses and managed to kick a loose ball through to set up a one man chase down the field and score his 2nd try in equally cool poise and ease. This young Pageant boy from NTU is certainly making his mark in the local rugby scene by insisting that he is not only a pretty face in the crowd but instead has got the makings of a Giant.

Totally outplayed and humiliated, the Japs turned on their Nissan sponsored engines and finally seemed to get into the groove of things and played their game. Ill discipline by the SRC forwards saw them give away penalties after penalties, which the Japs used to their best effect by scoring and slowly clawing their way back into the game.

In the 2nd half, a moment of madness by SRC prop Stormy Normy saw him yellow carded and spend 10mins under his posts. He was apparently shown the card for hands in the ruck, an offence so rampant in the 1st half that the ref lost his patience and shown him the yellow card

'I had the ruck secured and the japs were not challenging for the ball. When my player had the ball kicked forward back into the ruck, I conveniently used my hands to push the ball back again, only to be penalised' explained a distraught Stormy, whose only other Yellow card in his less than illustrous career coming from a dubious call by Singapore top ref Matt Oakley during an IVP game.

' I am definitely not the kind of player who cheats and plays dirty. I respect my opponents.' Stormy is definitely a top student in his earlier days as a Moral Education student.

As SRC continued to make use of their speedy Backs to hound the opposition, the game quickly became a one way traffic as the Jap fullback was constantly caught with the ball isolated. To top the icing on the cake, Emery 'Sub10' Ong grabbed his hattrick in style when he yet again burnt his Japs at will. Just before reaching the tryline, he appeared to taunt his opponent by turning around and offering him the ball, before accelerating off to finish off his hat trick.

'I wasn't trying to taunt him. i was offering the ball to our hooker who was screaming for it. But as I saw his lungs were already bursting trying to keep up with me, I thought it would be better for me to score it. Today was a walk in the park for me. Hat tricks are rare and I am glad I took my chance. I excelled in the catwalk arena and now I want to prove my worth on the field too.'

Emery 'Sub 10' Ong certainly has got the makings of a future star. Rugby-net will certainly be watching the progress of this youngster keenly. Looks like Coach 'Who needs gas?' Tan will have his hands full in fending off talent scouts from the modelling world poaching his latest protege.

Final score: SRC 50-17 japs

Bedok Kings Promised and Delivered

After some turmoil of ups and downs, Bedok Kings have proven themselves and established their status as the league champions by beating SCC 22-0 in last night’s final round fixture.

The opening exchanges were played at a furious pace as both sides mixed strong defence with fine continuity in attack. In the end, it was the hunger and composure, coupled with an uncompromising defensive effort that saw the Kings triumph.

The Kings controlled the first half and fully deserved their 10-0 interval lead, which would have been greater had they been a little more ruthless. Leading by only 3-0 entering the break, Bedok Kings finally broke through the yellow wall, with Daniel ‘Potato’ Thiam muscling through two tackles after a succession of quick rucks for the game’s first try.

The forward battle was abrasive throughout but the SCC scrum struggled and credit for this has to go to an improved and well-drilled Bedok forward pack.

The lineouts were an even affair with SCC holding a slight advantage as SMU’s DMC continually disrupted the Kings and created some turnovers.

Bedok Kings head coach Danny ‘Tau Sa Pao’ Tauroa showed little emotion to his side’s victory, as though it was just another day at the office.

“We regathered, reflected on our performance and then worked hard all week to rectify the areas of the game in which we were substandard. Similarly, after the win last night, we will not get carried away. We still have the cup semi final coming our way, the season’s not over just yet,” said Tauroa.

“The forwards deserve special mention. They drew a line in the sand and dared the opposition to cross it. A catalyst for our forwards’ dominance was a well-polished effort by the tight five. Using this solid platform in the scrums, we were then able to unleash the strength in our running game,” said Bedok boss TK.

“The game was a real arm wrestle. We knew we’d have to meet the physical side of things and I think to a large degree we did,” said Mark ‘Mr. Bicep’ Lee.

When asked on the tenacity of his team’s defensive effort, Rongy said, “We were really hungry on defence and we forced turnovers, that was the key. The most successful sides all prided themselves on being defensively formidable.”

The play of the day belonged to the trio of Andrew ‘Flash’ Kagoro, ‘Mr.V’ Rongy and Rebel Rong. They combined with neat exchanges of passes with ‘Flash’ starting and finishing the move for a splendid try.

Humility was definitely not a chapter in the books as Rebel Rong revealed, “I am damn good. Did you see my step anot? I saw this young boy in front of me, of course I jiat him lah! I am the best.”

“While the lads would be happy with the result, there were a couple of areas that we’ll have to work on. We were slightly off with our lineout throwing, allowing SCC to pinch several lineout balls. If we can apply this type of pressure also, we can create quick turnover ball and give our lethal backline plenty of room to launch attacking raids,” said an emotionless Tauroa.

“We’re not just done yet. There’s still a vendetta out there and plenty of work has to be done. I do hope the boys know that as well.”
