Bedok Kings Blow-Out Wanderers
Bedok Kings demolished Wanderers 53-12 at Farrer Park last evening, the bonus-point effort ensuring that the Kings stay top of the table, leading into the final round of the NRC.
Bedok Kings were the favourites going into this match and took a strangle-hold early on with an up-tempo attacking game, scoring two early tries for a handy lead of 10-0 in the opening minutes. Daniel ‘Potato’ Thiam had a sturdy performance at centre position, as he constantly broke the gain-line and put his outside backs into the clear, making a strong claim to his position.
However, the Wanderers showed that they were no easy pushovers, as they struck back through two quick stunning tries and overturned the deficit to take a slim lead of 12-10.
This ten-minute shocker spurred the Kings to life, as they hit their straps over the remaining minutes of the first half, with a barrage of unanswered tries.
Lightning-quick winger ‘Flash’ provided the play of the game as he picked up a loose ball in his own 22 from a restart before turning on the jets and took on nearly the entire Wanderers side with his elusive running, and finally off-loading to his supporting fullback for a five-pointer.
Rebel Rong had an encouraging outing as well, as he was spotted supporting Thiam after a line-break, before off-loading in a dramatic fashion (turning 180 deg like a ballet dancer) for his teammate to score.
Despite starting the second half with a well-worked try down the wing, a Bedok-dominated contest was not to follow. The Wanderers showed signs of a spirited comeback, as they provided a stiff test for the Bedok defence time and time again. The second half belonged the Wanderers in terms of possession, as the Kings found it tough to get out of their half. Trading penalties for lineouts, the Wanderers were determined to make the breakthrough, but were evenly matched by a feisty Bedok defence.
Bedok Kings ran out deserved winners in the end but there may well be calls for concern following their average second-half performance which was plagued by countless penalties; and their backs were starved of quality possession to make a difference.
“The ref is a f**king c**t. The penalty count in the second hallf was like what, twenty to one?” exclaimed Bedok boss Tony King.
NTU probable Rongy was also seen doing fitness as he undertook the arduous task of being the ‘Waterboy of the Day’. When asked on his injury, Rongy said, “I’ll be fine, I guess. In the meantime, I’ll have to go after the physio.. I mean go for physio.”
The NTU SELECTORS were especially pleased with ‘Undroppable’ Qing, as he continued to contribute extended minutes in the premier fixtures. The NTU SELECTORS were concerned, however, with Rebel Rong’s uncontrollable rage as he was let off lightly after dropping a punch on his opposite number during a tussle in the second half.
When asked about his brawl, Rebel Rong claimed, “He didn’t let go off me wat. Then I give lah.. If he wants then I give him. Qiah him.”
The NTU SELECTORS will be monitoring Rebel Rong closely for his upcoming matches.
