For those who dunno much about salsa dancing,
Salsa is a partner form that corresponds to salsa music, however it is sometimes done solo too. The word is the same as the Spanish word Salsa meaning sauce, or in this case flavour or style.
According to testimonial from Kevin the Salsa King himself, the name salsa was gradually accepted among dancers throughout various decades.
e-rugby: What is your background and how you get into Salsa?
Kevin: I was born in Singapore. As a kid, I was always attracted to the tropical music like merengue and cumbia. When I enlist to army about 1 year ago, I started going to the clubs, and that was when I saw the salsa dancers. And the passion of the dancers really drew me in.
e-rugby: Who are some people that have influenced you?
Kevin: The dancers in the street. Anyone that can dance with heart. (both hands point to his left chest)
e-rugby: What are some of the musicians that has influenced you?
Kevin: Cachao, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, El Gran Combo,
Eddy Palmieri, Oscar d'León, Tito Rodríguez, etc.
(hmm... can see from here that he is INDEED the salsa king)
e-rugby: How would you characterize your style?
Kevin: Elegance and sabor.
e-rugby: What are typical routines you do when you practice?
Kevin: I warm up dancing a whole song, and I stretch. Then we will practice working on details for about 7 hours a day.
e-rugby: What would you do if you get too stiff to dance salsa or can't dance salsa anymore?
Kevin: I would definitely like to teach salsa. I will probably do what I do now outside of salsa like playing rugby.
e-rugby: Any last thoughts?
Kevin: I want people to keep dancing and not worry about the different styles in dancing. I don't want any barriers or walls to keep people from dancing. Salsa should be a big family and unite people, not divide.
