SCC began their Div 2 title defence in convincing fashion with a drubbing of Bedok Kings. Boasting a side of former and current national age-group players, SCC kept Bedok scoreless and ran in unanswered tries in a result that will further hamper Bedok’s chances of securing a playoff spot. It was perhaps SCC’s largest ever win as Bedok slumped to their third consecutive loss with their coaching staff under heavy scrutiny.

SCC began the match with vigour as the forwards dominated most set pieces and brought a bruising approach to defence and breakdowns. NTU hooker, ‘Bryanboy’ Yik, remained effective at lineouts and was at the heart of most attacking phases that saw a lethal SCC backline creating havoc all over the park. He capped a brilliant performance with a try himself, crossing over the line by literally ‘leopard crawling’ across it.

Bedok had limited possession and relied largely on the creativity of Adam ‘Mat Solo’ Chan. He was in fine form with the boot as his well-measured kickoffs often put the SCC forwards on the backfoot, capitalising on their indiscretions and causing turnovers. Bedok showed signs of resurgence at times but they continually squandered opportunities in attack.

Despite the loss, Adam remains upbeat about his side, “The club’s in a tough transition period. It was a decent effort from the team, some of them are just 15 or 16. A loss is definitely difficult to swallow, especially in a manner as such. But I will still continue to put in my all in the next game.”

When interviewed, Bryanboy Yik dismissed any rivalry with Adam, or Bedok in general. “Eh, I friend friend one. Friendly leh. Lac ah.”, he said cheekily.

Despite experiencing a difference in fortunes, ‘Bryanboy’ Yik and Adam ‘Mat Solo’ Chan will no doubt be key members of the NTU rugby team. The NTU SELECTORS will be watching them closely.
